Those who have lost family members can use their experience to offer help and sympathy to grieving friends.
Dear {Recipient},
I am writing to extend my deepest sympathies over the loss of {the deceased}. As you know, I recently lost {a recent death of a friend or family member}, so I have some idea what you're going through right now.
I know that some days it can feel like you won't be able to get out of bed. And sometimes that's okay. But {the deceased} would expect you to be strong and continue on with your life, so eventually you'll have to get back to that. For now, it's okay to spend your entire day crying. I've done it. Soon, though, things will start to get a little easier. I promise.
Remember how much {the deceased} liked {something active the deceased like to do}? The next time you feel like you can't move, try to imagine {the deceased} prodding you on, encouraging you to {do the activity}.
And if you still can't manage to climb out of bed, call me. I'll be there anytime you need anything at all.
Love,
{Sender}
